USA Today: Could there be a new national park? Georgia lawmakers push for designation

A bipartisan group of Georgia lawmakers is championing a bill in Congress to elevate the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park to the nation's newest National Park and Preserve. The proposal aims to expand the current park, which holds 17,000 years of human history and is the ancestral homeland of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. If passed, the legislation would create Georgia's first-ever national park and establish a unique co-management plan with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, who were forcibly removed from the land in the 19th century.
